Sonos Voice Control with Lutron: What It Does and Needs
"Hey Sonos" is no longer music-only. Since July 2026, Sonos Voice Control can switch Lutron lights, move Lutron shades and turn on Lutron scenes, and Sonos says those commands run on the local network, so they keep working when the internet is down. Here is what it supports, what it needs, and how it sits next to the other voice routes into a Lutron system.
What it can do
Sonos's own list of voice requests has a Lutron section: turn lights on or off, change brightness, raise or lower shades, and turn on scenes. The same list covers grouping and ungrouping Sonos rooms by voice (Sonos: list of voice requests).
Which Lutron systems work
Sonos announced the Lutron integration on July 20, 2026 (Sonos: now available):

It is English only. Sonos's post says "HomeWorks" without naming a generation; Lutron's own Sonos document for HomeWorks covers the current QSX processors, so don't assume an older HomeWorks QS or Illumination system is included until you've checked.

What you need
- A Lutron hub or processor. Sonos talks to the Lutron system, not to individual dimmers.
- A voice-enabled Sonos speaker, with Sonos Voice Control turned on.
- The integration switched on in the Lutron app: Settings, then Integrations, then Sonos.
- The homeowner's Lutron login. Lutron's Caséta and RA2 Select article says it is set up signed in as the homeowner and is not available in Pro Installer mode. It also asks for Sonos software 97.0 or later for voice control of Lutron, and says the integration works with one Lutron system at a time (Lutron support).
On RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks QSX the Sonos integration follows the same rule: Lutron's application note #798 says it is set up in the Lutron app as the homeowner, that Pro Installer mode can't reach it, and that the processor's programming must come from Lutron Designer 21.4 or later (Lutron App Note #798). If your system was programmed years ago and never updated, that last point is the one to check with whoever holds the Designer file.
Why "local" matters
Every keypad, Pico and timeclock event in a Lutron system works without the internet. Voice is usually the exception: Alexa and Google Assistant handle smart-home requests through their own cloud services, so when the internet drops, voice control drops with it while the wall controls carry on. Sonos says its Lutron commands run locally and keep working without internet, which removes the most common "the lights are broken" call that is really an internet outage.
Alexa and Google on Sonos, and on Lutron
Sonos lists three voice services: Sonos Voice Control, Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant (Sonos: voice services). Google Assistant is limited: Sonos names Arc, Beam (Gen 1 and Gen 2), Move, One and Roam, and says that as of September 2026 it can no longer be added from an Android device. Existing setups keep working, and adding it again needs the iOS app (Sonos: Google Assistant).
On the Lutron side, RadioRA 3's listed integrations are Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Josh.ai, plus Sonos (Lutron RadioRA 3 FAQ). Lutron's HomeWorks page names Amazon Alexa, Apple Siri and Josh.ai (Lutron HomeWorks). The two pages don't list the same services, so check the one for your system rather than assuming they match.
The other direction: Lutron keypads playing Sonos
The integration also works the other way round. On RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks QSX, app note #798 lists what a Lutron keypad button can do to Sonos: play or pause, skip to the next track, step through your Sonos favorites, turn the volume up or down, and play or pause rooms as part of a Lutron scene. When Sonos rooms are grouped, play, pause and skip act on the whole group. Lutron makes a Pico for audio (PJ2-3BRL-Gxx-A02), and most Lutron keypad families can carry the buttons; Phantom keypads can't.
What's not on the list is joining or grouping rooms from a keypad. If you want one button to put the bedroom on whatever the kitchen is playing, that's a Sonos app job, a press-and-hold on the Sonos speaker itself, or, in a Control4 house, a Control4 keypad programmed to add the room. Before you rely on it
- Check the names. If a room is called "Kitchen" in the Sonos app and an area is called "Kitchen" in the Lutron app, try "turn off the kitchen" before the household does. Renaming before people learn the phrases is easier than after.
- Know what you're asking. Sonos's request list is the definitive set. A request that isn't on it isn't a bug.
- Control4 is not part of this. In a house where Lutron is integrated with Control4, the Sonos link goes straight to the Lutron system, beside Control4 rather than through it. Lutron with Control4 explains how those two connect.
If the Lutron side needs changing to make voice useful, such as area names, scenes that don't exist yet, or a system that needs its programming brought up to a current Designer version, that is programming, and it can be done remotely. What we charge for Lutron work is on our Lutron page.
