Basic "AppleTV Like" Remote

Where this came from: this question was asked on c4forums/General Control4 — not here. We answered it there, in public, and this is that answer.

I don't know of anything on the roadmap either. Here's what exists today, from the makers' own pages:

The Siri Remote itself. It can learn a TV's or receiver's IR volume codes (Settings > Remotes and Devices > Volume Control > Learn New Device), or drive a receiver over HDMI-CEC. If the thing doing volume understands IR or CEC, the household keeps the one remote they already use.

The catch with a Triad doing the volume is that the Siri Remote talks to a TV or receiver, not to Control4. The front IR receiver on the CORE controllers is documented for learning codes, not as a live remote input, so I wouldn't plan on routing the Siri Remote through it.

A Lutron Pico, if there's a Lutron system that Control4 already talks to (Caseta, RA2 Select or RA3 on the LEAP drivers, OS 3.1+). The driver brings Picos in as keypads. Two things from its documentation: a Pico sends only Pressed and Released (no hold or double-tap, by Lutron's design), and a button only sends events if a load is tied to it in the Lutron programming. With that done, press events on the room's volume up/down give you a three-button remote with no screen and a coin battery Lutron rates at ten years.

Control4's own: Halo (2.8" screen, backlit hard buttons, Wi-Fi, rechargeable, OS 3.3.2+) is the closest thing to an Apple TV remote they make. The SR260 is the older 50-button Zigbee one.

A wall keypad with volume buttons is the dull, reliable answer. It isn't a handheld, though, and I'm guessing that's what you're after.

For three rooms where the only job is volume on an Apple TV feeding a Triad, 40 buttons is the wrong tool and you're right to push back. The Pico is what I'd try first if there's Lutron in the house.

If you post which controller you have, the Triad model and whether there's any Lutron in the house, I'll tell you which of these fits your setup, even if the answer is something your current dealer can do in ten minutes.
