Smart blinds not closing fully

by TechSavvyHomeowner• 11 replies• 14811 views
Hey everyone, I'm hoping someone here can help me troubleshoot an issue that's been driving me crazy for the past couple of weeks. I have a set of Lutron Palladiom shades installed in my living room - specifically four units covering a large window wall facing west. They've been working perfectly for about 18 months, but recently I've noticed that two of them (the middle two) aren't closing fully anymore. When I send a close command - whether through the Lutron app, my Control4 system, or even the physical keypad - the shades will lower about 95% of the way and then stop. There's a visible gap at the bottom of maybe 2-3 inches. It's not huge, but it's definitely noticeable, especially in the evening when we're trying to block out the sunset glare while watching TV. Here's what I've tried so far: 1. I've recalibrated the shades through the Lutron app following their official procedure. The calibration process seems to complete successfully, but the problem persists. 2. I checked the physical tracks and hembar for any obstructions or debris - everything looks clean. 3. I tried running the shades up and down manually about 20 times thinking maybe something was binding, but no luck. 4. I've verified that the fabric isn't bunching up anywhere on the roll. 5. Reset the processor and re-paired the shades. The weird thing is that the outer two shades on the same window wall close perfectly every single time. All four shades are identical models, installed at the same time, and connected to the same processor. The two problematic shades are right next to each other in the center. I'm wondering if this could be a motor issue, a limit setting problem, or something else entirely. The shades don't make any unusual sounds when operating - no clicking, grinding, or straining. They just stop short of the bottom position as if they think they've reached their limit. One thing I should mention - we did have a power outage about three weeks ago that lasted several hours. I'm not sure if that could have corrupted something in the shade memory or settings. The timing seems to line up roughly with when I first noticed the issue. I really don't want to call out my integrator for what might be a simple fix, especially since their service call fees are pretty steep. Has anyone experienced something similar? Is there a way to manually adjust the lower limits on Palladiom shades, or is this something that requires the dealer programming software? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. These shades were a significant investment and I'd hate to think the motors are already failing after less than two years.

Integrator here. This is a pretty common issue we see with Palladiom shades after power events. The factory reset mentioned above is a good first step, but here's the complete procedure that usually resolves it: 1. Remove the shade from your Lutron system entirely 2. Perform the factory reset (15-second hold on the motor button) 3. Wait 30 seconds, then power cycle the shade by unplugging it briefly if accessible, or turning off the circuit 4. Re-add the shade to your system 5. Run the automatic calibration - make sure the room is quiet and there's no vibration during this process 6. If the calibration still comes up short, there's a manual adjustment mode where you can nudge the lower limit down in small increments The manual adjustment IS available in the homeowner app for basic tweaks - go to the shade settings, look for 'Adjust Limits' and you should be able to fine-tune the bottom position. This was added in a firmware update about a year ago. If you don't see it, your processor firmware might need updating.

I had almost the exact same issue with my Palladiom shades last year. In my case, it turned out to be the lower limit settings got corrupted somehow. Unfortunately, adjusting the precise limits on Palladiom requires the dealer software - it's not something you can do through the homeowner app. Might be worth asking your integrator if they can do a remote session to check the limits before scheduling a full service call.

Power outages can definitely mess with shade limits. Have you tried a full factory reset on just those two shades? Hold the shade button on the back of the motor for 15 seconds until the LED flashes rapidly, then re-add them to your system.

Thanks for the quick responses! I didn't realize the limit adjustments required dealer software - that's frustrating. I'll try the factory reset suggestion tonight and report back.

Just curious - are you sending the close commands from Control4 or directly from Lutron? Sometimes there can be integration quirks where the command being sent isn't quite 0%.

Good question - I tested from both systems and the physical Lutron keypad. Same result regardless of the source, so I don't think it's an integration issue.

The 'Adjust Limits' option that HighEndIntegrator mentioned is definitely your best bet. I've used it on my own shades when they drifted slightly. Super easy once you find it in the app.

Also worth checking - is your Lutron processor firmware up to date? I know they pushed an update earlier this year that addressed some shade calibration issues.

Update: I found the Adjust Limits option in the app! It was buried under Device Settings > Advanced. I was able to nudge the lower limit down on both shades and they're now closing completely. Thank you so much HighEndIntegrator - you saved me a service call! The whole process took maybe 10 minutes once I knew where to look.

Glad you got it sorted! I'd still recommend checking your processor firmware when you get a chance. If a power outage caused the limits to drift, there might be other settings that got affected too.
