Troubleshooting intermittent communication between Control4 EA-5 and Lutron RA2 Select bridge

by TechSavvyHomeowner• 10 replies• 6439 views
Hey everyone, I've been dealing with a frustrating issue for the past few weeks and I'm hoping someone here has encountered something similar. I have a Control4 EA-5 controller running OS 3.4.2 that's integrated with a Lutron RA2 Select main repeater for my lighting control. The system was professionally installed about 8 months ago and worked flawlessly until recently. The problem is intermittent communication drops between the Control4 system and the Lutron bridge. What happens is that randomly (sometimes once a day, sometimes multiple times, sometimes not for several days), the Control4 system loses the ability to control the Lutron lights. When this happens, the lights still work perfectly fine from the Pico remotes and the Lutron app, so I know the RA2 Select system itself is functioning correctly. It's specifically the integration that breaks. When the issue occurs, I can see in the Control4 Composer HE logs that it's getting connection timeouts when trying to communicate with the Lutron bridge. The really weird part is that sometimes it self-recovers after 5-10 minutes, and other times I have to manually restart the RA2 Select main repeater to restore communication. Rebooting the EA-5 alone doesn't seem to fix it. Here's my current setup: - Control4 EA-5 controller (OS 3.4.2) - Lutron RA2 Select main repeater (firmware 15.1.0) - Integration via IP (both devices on static IPs on the same VLAN) - UniFi Dream Machine Pro as my router/firewall - UniFi Switch Pro 24 PoE - About 45 Lutron switches and dimmers total Things I've already tried: 1. Verified both devices have static IPs and they're not conflicting with anything 2. Checked that both devices are on the same subnet with no VLAN issues 3. Replaced the Ethernet cable from the RA2 Select repeater 4. Disabled any power saving features on the network switch port 5. Made sure there are no IP address conflicts on my network 6. Checked the Lutron integration settings in Composer - telnet is enabled and the correct IP is configured I've read that some people have had issues with the telnet session timing out, but I'm not sure how to adjust those settings or if that's even the root cause. My dealer is stumped and suggested it might be a network issue, but everything else on my network works perfectly including other integrations like my Sonos system and security cameras. Has anyone experienced similar intermittent drops with Control4 and Lutron RA2 Select? Is there something specific about how the Control4 driver maintains the connection that could be causing this? I'm also wondering if there's a firmware mismatch issue or if I should be looking at the UniFi network settings more closely. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

I deal with this integration regularly and here's my comprehensive checklist for intermittent connection issues: 1. Disable ALL security scanning features on your UDM Pro for testing (threat management, IPS, IDS, DPI) 2. Set TCP timeout to 86400 seconds (24 hours) in your UniFi settings under Network > Settings > Advanced 3. Ensure the Lutron driver in Control4 is version 2023.02.15 or newer 4. Update RA2 Select firmware to 15.2.1 which fixed several telnet stability issues 5. In Composer, verify the connection type is set to "Persistent" not "On Demand" 6. Add both devices to a dedicated IoT VLAN with minimal traffic inspection In my experience, about 80% of these issues come from the UniFi security features, 15% from outdated drivers/firmware, and 5% from actual network hardware problems. Start with disabling the security scanning and see if it stabilizes over a few days.

This sounds like a classic telnet keepalive issue. The Control4 Lutron driver maintains a persistent telnet connection to the RA2 Select, and if that connection gets dropped or times out, you'll see exactly what you're describing. First thing I'd check is whether your UniFi equipment has any connection timeout settings that might be killing idle TCP sessions. Some enterprise-grade networking equipment will terminate connections that appear idle even if they're actually maintaining a keepalive.

Check your UDM Pro settings for TCP timeout values. UniFi defaults can sometimes be aggressive with idle connections. Also make sure you don't have any IPS/IDS features that might be interfering with the telnet traffic.

I had almost this exact issue last year. The culprit for me was the UniFi threat management feature. It was flagging the telnet connection as suspicious and intermittently blocking it. Once I created an exception for traffic between my EA-5 and Lutron bridge IPs, the problem went away completely. Worth checking your threat management logs to see if anything is being blocked.

Thanks for the quick responses! I just checked and I do have threat management enabled on the UDM Pro. I'll dig into those logs tonight and see if there's anything suspicious. @Control4Enthusiast - did you create the exception in the firewall rules or somewhere else in the UniFi settings?

I created a local network rule in the Traffic & Security settings that explicitly allows all traffic between those two device IPs. You can also try just disabling threat management temporarily to see if that's the cause before creating permanent rules.

Another thing to look at - there's a known issue with certain versions of the Lutron driver where the reconnection logic doesn't work properly after a timeout. Your dealer should be able to check if you're on the latest driver version in Composer Pro. I believe there was an update specifically addressing connection stability issues. Also, some integrators have had success setting up a scheduled refresh or reconnect command that runs every few hours as a preventive measure, though that's more of a band-aid than a real fix.

Had similar issues. Turned out to be the RA2 Select firmware. Version 15.1.0 had some network stack bugs. Check if there's an update available through the Lutron app.

Update: I disabled threat management and DPI on the UDM Pro last night and it's been rock solid for 36 hours now - usually it would have dropped at least once by now. I'm going to leave it like this for a week to confirm, then work on creating specific exceptions so I can re-enable the security features. Thanks everyone!

Glad you found it! This is such a common issue with UniFi and home automation. I always recommend clients either use a separate network for their automation equipment or create comprehensive exception rules from day one.
