Control4 EA-5 running warm with many Lutron devices

I've had my Control4 EA-5 installed for about 6 months now and recently noticed it's running noticeably warm to the touch. The system is controlling a fairly large Lutron RadioRA 3 installation - we have 47 dimmers, 12 Picos, and 8 Sivoia QS shades all integrated via the Lutron Connect bridge.
The EA-5 is mounted in a Middle Atlantic rack in our mechanical room with decent ventilation, but I'm wondering if this heat level is normal or if something is off. The processor seems responsive and everything works fine, but I've read that excessive heat can shorten the lifespan of these units.
A few specifics:
- Room ambient temp is around 72°F
- The EA-5 has 1U of space above and below it
- We also have two EA-1 controllers for other zones
- The system runs about 15 lighting scenes that get triggered throughout the day via schedules
Is anyone else running a similar setup with heavy Lutron integration? Should I be concerned about the warmth, or is this just the nature of the beast with larger Control4 installations? I'm also curious if adding any additional cooling would help or if it's overkill. My dealer mentioned it's probably fine but I wanted to get some real-world feedback from others running comparable systems.

Professional integrator here with hundreds of EA-5 installs under my belt. What you're describing sounds completely normal for a system of that size. The EA-5 has a rated operating temperature range up to 104°F ambient, so your 72°F room is well within spec.
That said, there are a few things I always recommend for larger installations. First, make sure your Lutron polling interval isn't set too aggressively - the default is usually fine but some dealers crank it up unnecessarily. Second, verify your rack has proper airflow and isn't in a confined cabinet. Third, consider adding a small AC Infinity fan kit to your rack if you want peace of mind. It's not required but can drop temps by 10-15 degrees and the units are whisper quiet.

EA-5s do run warm by design - they're passively cooled. With 47 Lutron devices polling regularly, that's a lot of communication happening. As long as it's not hot to the point of being uncomfortable to touch, you're probably fine.

47 dimmers is a solid installation! The RadioRA 3 integration is pretty efficient compared to the old RA2 days. I wouldn't worry unless you're seeing actual performance issues.

I have a similar setup with an EA-3 and about 30 Lutron devices. Mine runs warm too. I added one of those small USB-powered fans from Amazon and it made a noticeable difference. Cost me like $25.

Have you checked the processor diagnostics in Composer? There's a system health section that shows CPU temp and load. That would give you actual numbers to work with rather than guessing based on touch. Your dealer should be able to pull those metrics remotely if you don't have Composer HE access.

Thanks everyone! I reached out to my dealer and he pulled the diagnostics - CPU is sitting around 145°F under normal operation which he said is well within normal range. Going to grab one of those AC Infinity fans anyway just for the extra margin. Appreciate the help!

145°F is totally normal for an EA-5 under load. Good call on the fan though - cheap insurance for expensive equipment.
