Control4 driver updates for Lutron devices
by Control4Enthusiast• 10 replies• 8650 views
Hey everyone, I'm reaching out because I've been running into some frustrating issues with my Control4 system and Lutron integration lately, and I'm hoping some of you more experienced integrators can point me in the right direction.
I have a fairly extensive setup with Control4 EA-5 controller running OS 3.4.1, integrated with a Lutron RadioRA 3 system. The system has been working flawlessly for about two years, but after a recent Control4 update, I've noticed several issues cropping up:
1. **Delayed feedback** - When I adjust shades or lights through the Lutron app directly, it takes anywhere from 5-30 seconds for the Control4 interface to reflect the actual state. This used to be nearly instantaneous.
2. **Scene inconsistencies** - My "Good Morning" scene that triggers both Control4 and Lutron devices is now firing the Lutron components about 3-4 seconds after the Control4-native devices. This creates a weird staggered effect that my wife absolutely hates.
3. **Occasional complete disconnection** - About once a week, the Lutron integration just drops entirely. I have to go into Composer Pro and refresh the connection, or sometimes restart the processor entirely.
My dealer mentioned that Control4 released updated drivers for Lutron integration sometime in the past few months, but he's been swamped with other projects and hasn't had time to come out and update my system. He did mention something about needing to update both the main Lutron driver AND individual device drivers.
So my questions are:
- Has anyone else experienced similar issues after updating to OS 3.4.x?
- Are the new Lutron drivers available through the standard driver update process in Composer, or do they need to be downloaded separately?
- Is this something I could potentially handle myself if I have Composer Pro access, or is this really a job for a certified dealer?
- For those who have updated, did it actually resolve timing and feedback issues?
I've done some searching on the Control4 forums but the information there is pretty scattered and often outdated. I know some of you run similar setups and have probably dealt with this already.
For reference, my Lutron system includes:
- 47 Sunnata switches/dimmers
- 22 Sivoia QS shades
- 2 RadioRA 3 processors in a connected setup
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. I'm also curious if anyone has compared the native Control4-Lutron integration versus using something like SSDP or a third-party driver solution. At this point, I'm willing to explore alternatives if the official integration continues to be problematic.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Here's what worked for me - this is the process I follow for all my clients:
1. Open Composer Pro and connect to your project
2. Go to the Drivers section and check for updates on the Lutron RadioRA 3 protocol driver first
3. Update that driver and let it reinitialize the connection
4. Then go through each Lutron device in your project and check for driver updates individually
5. After all updates, do a full project refresh
6. Restart your EA-5 for good measure
The key is doing the protocol driver FIRST before the device drivers. I made the mistake of doing it backwards on one job and had to start over. Also, make sure your Lutron firmware is current - I believe RA3 needs to be on at least version 1.8.x for full compatibility with the new C4 drivers.

The updated drivers you're looking for were released about 6 weeks ago. Yes, you need to update both the main RadioRA 3 protocol driver AND each individual Lutron device driver. The good news is if you have Composer Pro access, this is totally doable yourself - just make sure to backup your project first.

I had the exact same delayed feedback issue on my RA3 system. The new drivers completely fixed it for me. The scene timing is much tighter now too.

Your Sivoia QS shades specifically benefit from the driver update. There was a known bug with shade position feedback that got addressed. My clients were complaining about the same thing - shades showing 50% in the app when they were actually fully closed.

Wait, you guys have Composer Pro access as homeowners? My dealer guards that like it's Fort Knox. How did you get access?

Thanks everyone! @AutomationPro2020 that's exactly the step-by-step I was looking for. @DIYSmartHome - I had to specifically negotiate Composer Pro access when I signed my contract. Some dealers are more flexible than others, especially if you're technically inclined and they trust you won't break things.

Just chiming in to confirm AutomationPro's process works perfectly. I updated my system last month following similar steps and my RA3 integration has been rock solid since. The weekly disconnection issue you mentioned was a known bug that got patched.

One thing I'd add - after updating, go into your Lutron programming and verify your integration IDs are still correctly mapped. I've seen a few cases where the driver update reset some device mappings, particularly for shades that were added after the initial setup. Takes an extra 10 minutes but saves headaches later.

Don't forget to also check your scene programming after the update. Some of my macro timings needed adjustment because the new drivers actually respond faster than the old ones. What used to need a 500ms delay now works fine with 200ms or no delay at all.
